History of FACET
The Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching ( FACET) program at Indiana University is designed to recognize, encourage, and enhance outstanding teaching throughout the eight IU campuses. Begun in 1989, its concept was set into motion by then Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties, Anya Peterson Royce (IU Bloomington), and Associate Academic Advisor to the President, Eileen Bender (IU South Bend). Dr. Bender continued as the University Director of FACET through her retirement in 2001, and the program was headquartered on the South Bend campus of Indiana University until then. The program continued under the direction of Professors Sharon Hamilton and Robert Orr, headquartered on the Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis campus through June of 2006. As of July 1, 2006 Professor David J. Malik took over directorship and the program will continue to be headquartered on the Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis campus.
To qualify for the distinction of FACET membership, faculty members must be outstanding
full-time, faculty members usually with a minimum of four years of service in the IU system,
nominated by their peers in late fall of each year. A nine-member statewide selection committee
(one representative from each campus plus a committee chairperson) chooses 20-25 winners
from among a total of 45-60 dossiers typically submitted by all 8 campuses each year. Announcements
of each year's FACET winners are made in March by the FACET office.
In 1995, through a Presidential initiative, FACET activities expanded both on the eight
Indiana University campuses and statewide, to include teaching colloquia, workshops, institutes,
consultation, and communication: the first steps in establishing an Indiana University teaching
excellence network. FACET liaisons were selected for each campus to coordinate teaching
excellence activities and to oversee the nomination process.
Now numbering over 450 alumni, FACET members have become engaged in other dimensions of
university policy. A group was involved in two university-wide General Education Conferences.
FACET has participated in a Midwest cluster of teaching fellowship programs sponsored by
the Lilly Endowment. In 1995, FACET published its Teaching Mission Statement at the request
of the Indiana University Trustees' Joint Committee on Learning.
FACET has also developed a series of programs in response to the IU Strategic Directions
Charter Initiative, including a Distance Learning project in conjunction with the School
of Continuing Studies at IU Bloomington, a statewide Associate Faculty Conference, a Faculty
Leadership Institute for post-tenure faculty, and in conjunction with RUGS (Research and
University Graduate School), the Future Faculty Teaching Fellows that will prepare doctoral
students to teach the seven IU regional campuses.
Thus, FACET is more than a teaching award. This network of talented faculty represents
a valuable resource for their colleagues, and a significant model for faculty development.
