FACET Application - Guidelines for Preparing the FACET Application
Candidates and peer reviewers should consider the selection criteria carefully in preparing their materials for submission. They may also consult the rating form used in the campus and statewide selection processes. Some faculty may find that this format is difficult to use due to the nature of their teaching assignments, e.g., clinical faculty, librarians, and faculty in the performing arts. If you feel that the recommended structure is too restrictive to illustrate your teaching strengths, you may adopt an alternative form (see the section on Alternative or Unconventional Documentation below).
Parts of the Application
The overall dossier contains the following elements that serve to establish a strong case for successful nomination. Each of these will be described in greater detail below. The candidate provides items 1 through 6: Items 2 - 5 are typically in a single pdf file (see file naming conventions below). The Peer Reviewers submit their letters directly to FACET.

- FACET NOMINATION DOSSIER COVER SHEET: Candidates must provide their name, campus, department or division, campus address, phone number, and e-mail address. Candidates are also asked to list their years of fulltime teaching on any IU, IUPUI, or IPFW campus. In addition, candidates are asked to list the departmental or divisional chair and Dean for future award correspondence.
- CANDIDATE'S NARRATIVE STATEMENT (limit 5 pages): In this section, the candidate articulates his or her continuing commitment to teaching. Candidates should be sure to discuss their work in the scholarship of teaching, their efforts to mentor students, and their work on behalf of teaching with their colleagues. Candidates should also discuss their outreach efforts, and give evidence of their commitment to continued professional growth as a teacher.
- TEACHING OR COURSE PORTFOLIO (limit 10 pages): This section allows for the documentation of excellence in teaching and learning. More discussion of this section can be found below.
- QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE EVALUATION DATA (limit 5 pages): More discussion of this section can be found below.
- OPTIONAL SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS (limit 10 pages): Candidates may attach a selection of course materials that are illustrative of their statement. Materials may include, but are not limited to syllabi, exams, and assignments. This section is perhaps more relevant to those candidates needing alternative or unconventional documentation.
- CURRICULUM VITAE (no page limit): It would be appropriate to highlight within your Teaching or Course Portfolio and Candidate Statements items from your vitae relating to teaching.
- PEER REVIEWER LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Two letters, which must include peer reviews, are required in each FACET nomination dossier. The Candidate must provide the names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of the letter writers. Requirement: Peer reviewers must have observed the candidate in a teaching environment on at LEAST one occasion within the past 2 years.
File Naming Convention: All portions of the application MUST be emailed as pdf files with the exception of the cover sheet. The individual components are cover sheet, dossier, Curriculum Vitae, and two peer reviewer letters of recommendation. The files are emailed to facet@iupui.edu using the following naming conventions.
- Cover Sheet: Candidate_Last_Name-cover.doc
- Dossier: Candidate_Last_Name -dossier.pdf
- Curriculum vitae: Candidate_Last_Name-cv.pdf
- Peer reviewer letter: Candidate_Last_Name-Peer_Reviewer_Last_Name-PR.pdf
For example, candidate Smith with peer reviewer Einstein would have a cover sheet file named "Smithcover. doc" and a peer reviewer file named "Smith-Einstein-PR.pdf", as well as a dossier and cv file and another peer reviewer file. The dashes are required simple hyphens between names. Five total documents are emailed to the FACET office at facet@iupui.edu. Documents can be created as Word files, and converted to and saved as pdf files using the print dialog box. Any problems with file conventions or transfer should be directed to the FACET Office at 317-274-5647 or email facet@iupui.edu.

Alternative or Unconventional Documentation: Many faculty members have teaching duties that do not occur in traditional classrooms settings. These
include, but are not limited to librarians, faculty in the professional schools, faculty with clinical appointments,
faculty in the fine or performing arts, and faculty who teach online or through other multimedia
systems. Faculty members in these categories may find that the standard application format limits their
ability to document their excellence in teaching. FACET welcomes such faculty members to document their
cases in an alternate format.
In developing their alternate applications, candidates must keep in mind the overall goal of the selection process: to identify IU faculty members who are dedicated to and recognized for excellence in college teaching and learning.
- The dossier should provide strong evidence that the candidate is afforded the highest regard as a teacher by their peers and their students.
- The dossier should provide readers with a sense of the candidate's interactions with his or her students.
- The dossier should reveal the candidate's efforts to participate in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
- The dossier should demonstrate both current excellence and a commitment to continued growth as a teacher.
- The dossier should show that the candidate is committed to acting as a leader and a mentor in the improvement of teaching in his or her unit.
Note that ALL candidates must provide two letters that include peer review of their teaching. The observations need not have been in a classroom setting, however, the letter writers must have had enough experience of the candidate's teaching to provide an appropriate review.
